Camel Spiders or Wind Scorpions
I had a call today from a desperate mother from Blanding UT whose son was extremely allergic to Wind Scorpions. Wind scorpions have the strongest bite of the desert insects with jaws up to a third of its body size. Their food consists of insects,
lizards, scorpions, and small birds. Wind scorpions are also known as camel spiders or sun spiders. They are not considered deadly but they do have a very painful bite and inject a toxin into the body of their pray that will liquefy it so that they can suck it down. Some people may be allergic to this toxin and can experience anaphylaxis as was the case with this woman’s son. The best way to treat for these arachnids is to maintain a strong barrier around the perimeter of the home and actively treat their food supply.
